November 2016–April 2017

The Utah State University Service Center began the “Facing Depression in Logan” project in order to provide a way for people to connect through stories and increase the community’s understanding of depression. The Facing Depression committee enlisted a team of writers/biographers, including myself, to be paired one-on-one with citizens who are combating depression. The pairs met, got to know each other, and shared their stories. As a writer for this project, I used my skills to take on the voice and persona of my contact and wrote as if I was them. The stories were then compiled into a book and were shared throughout the community. A selection of the stories was acted out by local actors in theater and monologues—bringing a face to the voice. My piece "Monotonous" from the storyteller Jeffrey-Ian Black selected and performed during the Facing Depression Performance.
